- Rapper Dequantes Devontay Lamar, aka Rich Homie Quan tragically passed away at his home on September 5th. The Atlanta rapper was only 34. Here’s what we know.
Fox 5 Atlanta reported around 3 am on September 5th, Lamar’s brother (Andre Mumford) found the rapper unconscious on his kitchen floor. Unaware of the severity of the situation, Andre placed Lamar on a couch to rest.
Around 11 am, Lamar’s girlfriend found him still on the couch. He was unresponsive with no signs of life.
Authorities were called and Dequantes was rushed to a nearby hospital. He was quickly pronounced dead upon arrival.
WKRN stated;
“‘The cause and manner of death are pending the completion of laboratory studies and microscopic examination of tissue slides,’ the medical examiner said.”
A number believe the autopsy will return as a drug overdose based on circumstances.
Quan’s Life
Rich Homie Quan came to fame in 2011, earning mainstream success with hit singles like “Type of Way” in 2013 and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh)” in 2015. NPR did a beautiful job highlighting and recognizing the rapper’s monumental achievements.
Honing his craft in his mom’s basement, he’d eventually find himself at the forefront of a surge that contested and changed modern music.
Quan not only created success for himself, he truly boasted his Atlanta upbringings. At the time, the rapper was amongst a new era of artists taking the world by storm. Future and Thug were fellow Atlantians who joined Quan at the frontlines of this new found era of hip-hop.
His abilities to create songs incorporating street hardened beats complimented by psychedelic overtones are part of the reason the rapper garnered tremendous success.
The rapper produced consecutive Billboard hits, winning multiple BET awards in 2014, followed by numerous other awards and nominations.
What’s Next For Quan?
Posthumous work has already been released by the artist. “Song Cry” dropped on September 17th. The track is overall light-hearted and sentimental, no doubt paying respect to the rapper’s untimely death.
Quan was reportedly working on a 23 song album supposedly meant to release in the near future. This promises more posthumous work is likely to come.
