Originally from West Virginia, Mike Teezy recently released his new single/music video, “Hands On Me,” featuring Jekalyn Carter.
Now living in North Carolina, Teezy has been through trials and tribulations, such as being told twice by doctors that he would never walk again after two separate serious car accidents, Teezy pushed forward in his walk and stayed on track with his goal.
The “Hands On Me” music video features powerful imagery reflecting Teezy‘s struggles and triumphs. The video incorporates scenes of prayer and resilience, symbolizing the artist’s unwavering faith amidst adversity. “Hands On Me” conveys a message of triumph over adversity, emphasizing Teezy‘s belief in God’s ability to overcome challenges.
Dopetrackz caught up with Mike Teezy to discover the inspiration for “Hands On Me,” how he linked up with Jekalyn Carter, and how he got started in music.
What inspired your latest single/music video, “Hands On Me?
Truly the word of God! Revelations 12:11 says, ‘We overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the words of our testimonies.’ So, I wanted to share some of the feelings I’ve felt. Struggles that I’ve battled with, in order to encourage and help someone else.
Who directed the video and where was it shot?
Dir. Will Thomas, and we shot it in Atlanta, GA.
What do you want people to take away from the video?
No matter what your situation looks like; with God anything is possible.
How did you connect with Jekalyn Carr?
Through social media! Jekalyn saw a video of mine that went viral in late 2022. Started following me and supporting my music. We later talked about working together. I ended up on her latest album, ‘JEKALYN,’ on track #7 entitled ‘Celebration.’ Which also featured Kirk Franklin and Pastor Mike Jr. Then we teamed up again on ‘Hands on Me.’
How did you get started in music?
I’ve always had a passion for music. I was raised in a musically inclined family. I started dancing and playing the drums when I was four years old. But I didn’t discover my gift of rapping and singing until I started playing around recording with friends in college, around 2010.
Which singers/musicians influenced your sound?
I’ve been influenced by a lot of artists and genres. So, to list a few, I’d have to say Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, Drake, Big Sean, Busta Rhymes, Lecrae, and Kirk Franklin.
If you had to describe your sound to the uninitiated, what would you say?
I believe my sound is different and refreshing. In my catalog, you’ll find a taste of almost every genre. Elements of R&B, Hip-Hop, Pop, Funk, Gospel and more.
Why do you make music?
I really want to change and impact the world through my music.
What can you share about your writing process?
I actually stopped physically writing my songs in 2016. So, my process involves me freestyling, and doing what’s called ‘punch-ins.’ This allows me to be free, and not confined to the lines on my paper.
Which artists in your opinion are killing it right now?
Caleb Gordon, Jekalyn Carr, Forrest Frank, Hulvey, J. Cole, Drake, etc. There are so many to mention.
How do you define success?
I define my success by how much I’m able to give back to my community and my family. Also, in the amount of people I’ve been able to bring with me.
What can your fans look forward to over the next six months? Live gigs? Music videos?
I’m definitely dropping more music! I have a lot of songs already set to be released, and I can’t wait for the world to hear them. I may be dropping another album later this year, along with another tour.
