Dallas, Texas-based rapper Nana Bangz recently dropped her first track of 2024, a banger entitled “Alive,” which conjures up the fierceness of Lady Rage and the swanky party energy of Foxy Brown.
“Alive” eschews the mumble rapping flow of the prior decade for spick-and-span rhymes and precise phrasing, revealing Bangz’s thesaurus-like lexis and gift for fashioning adroit couplets. An ability that sets her apart in the male-dominated world of hip-hop.
Citing influences like Lil Kim and Missy Elliot, Bangz infuses her music with contemporary flair and the distinctive elements of trap – double-time high-hats, long decay kick drum, tight snare, and a heavyweight bassline.
“Alive” opens on a classic sample, blending jazz and doo-wop, followed by the entry of Bangz’s spit-fire flow, tinted with snarling textures. As the synths begin to drift, her vocals take on dreamy, melodic surfaces, including a sample of Seals and Crofts’ “Summer Breeze,” imbuing the lyrics with creamy R&B timbres. Fluttering purrs and delicious whoops add zest to Bangz’s delivery.
The combination of switching from an attacking flow to velvety dulcet tones gives the tune a strong/soft feel that’s compelling.
Simultaneously sharp and mellow, “Alive” fuses adventurous flows that result in a drama-packed track with beaucoup audacity.
