Interview: Talking with Apropos about His New Single/Music Video “Heartbreak”
Singer-songwriter Apropos recently unveiled his new single/music video, “Heartbreak,” a song reflecting the universal feeling of love and loss.
The song follows the desire for an everlasting bond while being held back by hesitation, knowing the dreamy days can turn into long, regretful nights. It breaks down the thought process, trying to slow down any decision-making before damage is done, but the idea of love takes over and makes it hard to slow down.
Throughout the video, Apropos falls deeply in love with the woman of his dreams as their relationship slowly spirals into chaos through precisely crafted scenes. It shows that falling in love has many layers, but not all of the outcomes are good.
Dopetrackz spoke with Apropos to discover more about the inspiration behind “Heartbreak,” his experience as a contestant on The Voice, and his creative process.
Inspiration Behind “Heartbreak”
What inspired your latest single/music video, “Heartbreak?”
Reflection. Memories of starting friendships, relationships, and partnerships. I really wanted to touch on the transition period when you’re reaching the end of the honeymoon phase and the tables start to turn.
Who directed the video and where was it shot?
Nari Garner and Cy Abdelnour directed the video, and the team shot it at various locations throughout Detroit. Specifically, the climactic bar scene took place at the incredible speakeasy and jazz venue Bert’s in Eastern Market. The driving scenes also feature streets throughout Detroit.
What do you want people to take away from the video?
I want people to feel the feeling you get when tables turn in a relationship. That moment of realization when something that started well starts to go south. The video dramatizes that experience with higher stakes, but ultimately it’s a universal feeling. I also want people to appreciate the incredible craftsmanship Nari and Cy brought to every shot. I can’t put enough respect on their names.
In 2020, you were a contestant on The Voice. What lessons did you take away from the experience?
I learned a tough lesson from my experience with The Voice. I was competing during the height of the COVID pandemic, so I was unable to leave my room. I ended up practicing so much I damaged my vocal cords and was unable to hit the notes I can usually hit during my performance. The lesson I learned from that is that it’s okay to rest. It’s okay to take a day off and take a step back. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do for yourself is take a day to not worry about being productive.
How did you get started in music?
I became the lead singer of a band called Soul Divide in high school and performed with them for many years. After the group disbanded over creative differences, I spent a couple years in flux. In 2017, I decided to go solo, teamed up with my longtime friend Spencer Hayes, and Apropos was born.
Which singers/musicians influenced your sound?
David Ruffin, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder, James Brown. The list goes on…
If you had to describe your sound to the uninitiated, what would you say?
My name is Apropos because my voice is appropriate for any genre. Ultimately, I feel like I am the bridge between the generational gap in music.
Why do you make music?
That’s like asking why I breathe. Music keeps me going. I need it to live.
What can you share about your writing process?
My legendary mentor Allee Willis taught me a lot of secrets I don’t want to share but I can tell you that one major part of my process is not worrying about the words. I like to start with the melody, even if it’s just mumbling or humming or whistling. I basically outline the song with melodic sounds and then go back and fill in the words.
Which artists in your opinion are killing it right now?
Love this question, so many people I’m just gonna go down a list. Childish Gambino, Masego, Eryn Allen Kane, Victoria Monet…just to name a few.
How do you define success?
I define success as how well you complete your own short- and long-term goals. As long as you are consistently progressing and achieving the things you are trying to achieve, that to me is success.
What can your fans look forward to over the
My fans can look forward to ‘The Apropos Edition,’ a four-part EP that will be dropping later this year. And I’m also going to be going on a European club tour and I can’t wait to be on stage again. Performing live music is my favorite thing in the world, so I’m thrilled for that opportunity to meet and connect with new fans and music lovers.
