Eminem Stans Documentary Explores Superfan Culture
Eminem devised the term “Stan” with his 2000 hit, laying the foundation for today’s superfan culture long before the social media era. Recently, Slim Shady announced plans to co-produce the “Stans” documentary. The film explores the multilayered relationship between artists and their audiences while giving fans greater access to their legendary icons.
According to Variety, Stans will premiere later this year. The 15-time Grammy Award winner is producing the project through Shady Films alongside DIGA Studios and Hill District Media. Eminem’s manager, Paul Rosenberg, shared a statement about the documentary.
“‘Stans’ will be the opportunity for us to turn the camera around and ask the audience about being fans — and in some cases, fanatics,” said Rosenberg. “This is a study of the relationship between fanbase and artist through the lens of one of Eminem’s most fascinating songs and one of the world’s most important entertainers.”
Paul Rosenberg and Tony DiSanto Discuss the Project
The team currently uses “Stans” as the working title for the documentary. MTV/Paramount will distribute the film. DIGA CEO Tony DiSanto also shared his thoughts on his longtime relationship with Rosenberg during the MTV Total Request Live (TRL) era. He also explained how Stans will highlight Eminem’s music career and personal story.
“Paul Rosenberg and I have known each other since my days on MTV’s ‘TRL’, a show that was driven by the power of fandom, bringing artists and their fans together. So when he told me about the idea for this film, it felt like we had come full circle,” said DiSanto. “‘Stans’ will explore the complex relationship between fame and super fandom, told through the lens of one of the world’s most iconic artists, Eminem, his music, and, especially, his most extreme fans.”
The Legacy of Eminem’s “Stan”
Eminem released “Stan” on The Marshall Mathers LP in 2000. The 45 King produced the multiplatinum track, which debuted at No. 51 in December 2000. In 2017, the Oxford English Dictionary added the term “stan” to its website, cementing its place in popular culture.
